Portrait of an Artist

Marina Radius was born in 1953 in Indonesia while her parents worked there for a number
of years as Dutch expatriats. In 1958, her family returned to the Netherlands. She received
her art education as painter and sculptress at the Royal Academy of Art in Rotterdam.
Her work is traditional, inspired by the old Masters, with subjects ranging from people to
animals and landscapes. Some of her paintings, which sometimes have a surrealistic
aura, show a fairy tale-like ambiance which is also present in her statues and medals.

Marina clearly has a preference for creating symbolic expressions on all her medals
and places herself among medals creators of traditional style. Within the short
timespan of one year, she created a homogenous oeuvre that shows a different
side of modern medal creation. Generally, Marina avoids straight lines, square
objects and extracted and stylized shapes. In her imagination, she lives with fairy
tales and pure symbolism to which she adds her own philosophy to connect with
timeless transcendence and eternity. The foundation of ideas which Marina applies
rests in a constant balance between the temperal and eternal. Latin texts are added
to the medals because to her they are universal and timeless. The medals portrayed
can be interpreted without complicated stories and will certainly impress medal
lovers. Marina Radius has successfully tackled the challenge of creating attractive
medals with a traditional look and thus helps to keep alive the ancient art
of medal-making in Europe.

Creation Process

Marina Radius applies the following work method in the creation of her medals:
she starts by creating the medal in clay or wax. After finishing the design,
she applies a silicon mold fortified by a plaster cap. Subsequently, the design
is turned over  and the clay is removed. The resulting space is filled with liquid wax
so that the obverse  side is now made of modelling wax. After allowing the material
to cure, Marina creates the reverse image in the flat surface of the wax model.
